Rob looks to help tarmac novice

This weekend’s Rally Isle of Man sees a change of driver for Island based co-driver Rob Fagg as he teams up with Cumbrian based Welshman Matt Edwards for the fifth round of the UK Kick Energy Fiesta SportTrophy.

Current joint championship leader Edwards and Neteller.com supported Fagg will tackle the Challenge section of the Douglas based event which sees the two days split into two separate scoring opportunities. Although only day 1 will count towards the Fiesta series which will be the main priority for the new pairing.

Edwards comes to the event with very little tarmac experience, in fact he only gained his first experience last weekend when he contested The Old Range Stages held on Trawsfynydd Ranges in North Wales. The experience proved a very worthwhile exercise, with Edwards taking time to acclimatise to the new handling characteristics of his car and steadily increasing his pace as confidence grew throughout the day.

"Today has been very interesting for me, as it’s the first time I've driven a car on proper slicks with the correct suspension on, and it’s quite a challenge to come to terms with the grip available and trust the car” explained Edwards, “The Manx roads tend to be faster than these, however the bumps here are more severe than the worst we will encounter next weekend; the changeable weather has also been a useful experience so all in all we have had a good taste of what is to come.”

The High Hill Ford, GPM, Silkolene 710 supported Welshman will look to make full use of co-driver Fagg’s local knowledge as he seeks to achieve his goal of finishing his first close road rally.

“Having Rob on board can only be a benefit coming to the Isle of Man” commented Edwards, “He has done plenty of rallies on these roads from club events to International and hopefully the knowledge he has gained he can pass on to help us achieve a good points result this weekend.”

The event will offer another first for Edwards as he will have his first opportunity to complete a

pre-event reconnaissance of the stages, allowing him for the first time to check his pace notes first hand as opposed to through a DVD recording. Mexperience.com backed Fagg though is no stranger to undertaking recce’s and believes it can only make the new experience for Edwards easier.

“I think the benefit of the recce, getting to see the stage prior to the event will take the shock out of the event for Matt” explained Fagg, “He will get the chance for the first time to make sure he is happy with his notes from first hand experience rather than through sitting in front of the TV. I hope that through the knowledge I have built up since starting out on these roads in 2000 I can assist in producing a good set of notes which he can commit 100% to on this new event and that we can get a good points haul in our bid for the championship.

The main opposition this weekend will come from the Irish trio of fellow championship leader Kyle Orr, Craig Breen and Mark Donnelly, with winner last time out Kris Hall also in the frame. With extension previous tarmac experience it is a tough ask for Edwards to be on the pace from the off but the Manx is a tough rally with solid hedges waiting to punish any mistake.

The event gets underway on Friday 10th July with the International field away first followed by the Challenge crew approximately one hour later. The Challenge crews will tackle the first eight stages totalling 80 miles and it will also be these stages the Kick Energy Fiesta SportTrophy result will be decided over.

Challenge crews will resume battle from scratch again on Saturday morning and again follow the international field, this time completing all stages totalling a further 80 competitive stage miles. The event is due to finish around 4pm with the final stage bringing crews back to the event base at the TT Grandstand in Douglas.
