Fagg hopes to maintain title challenge

Isle of Man co-driver Rob Fagg heads to the Scottish Borders this weekend as he partners Northern Irish youngster Kyle Orr on the fourth round of the UK Kick Energy Fiesta SportTrophy, the RSAC Scottish Rally based in Dumfries.

The relatively new pairing will be hoping to continue where they left off on the last round back in April, the Pirelli International Rally,  when they finished second and in the process took the series lead. On that occasion they actually led the event but dropped time to eventual victor and the current man in form Craig Breen on the last stage due a lack of grip from their worn tyres.

Orr and Neteller.com supported Fagg will not have the benefit of undertaking a reconnaissance on this occasion as the series takes in an event outside of the British Championship for the second and final time which does not permit this. Despite this Orr has had the opportunity to preview the stages through the use of a safety DVD produced by the event notes supplier.

“We would obviously prefer to have the chance to recce the stages but that’s just not an option on this event” commented Fagg, “As a result we just have to try and graft as much information form the DVD to get the best set of notes we can. Kyle has already spent a number of hours doing this and we hope to have another chance on Friday evening.”

The current series leaders will head the field away from the Ceremonial Start in the Dumfries, and despite having not found himself on the top step of the podium this year; Kyle certainly has found the pace to challenge for that first win this weekend.

Victory will certainly be by no means easy and the battle at the front should prove to be a close affair. Second place Mark Donnelly has been quick all year and he is another looking for his first win, adding to that round one winner Matt Edwards every second will count.

The main challenge for all crews and the benchmark this year is that of rapid Irishman Craig Breen. He and 2008 Champion co-driver Gareth Edwards are in a rich vain of form at present having taken victories on the last two rounds of the UK and Irish series as well as the opening round of the International.

All four crews will be new to the Scottish stages but Fagg does have previous experience having contested the event back in 2005 as part of the BRC Stars of the Future series.

“The event is renowned as being rough and it was certainly that back in 2005” explained Fagg, “James (Wozencroft) and I were in the Suzuki Swift Super 1400 and it was tough going on some of the stage with big rocks littering the stages. With new stages in the event this year hopefully that should not be a problem and the single usage should help.”

With two tarmac events following this event on the calendar the pairing will be hoping to strengthen their current position in the championship prior to the switch in surface and Rob’s home round Rally Isle of Man.

This weekend’s event is due to get underway at 08:30 before the crews head into the forests of the Scottish borders to tackle the 6 stages totalling 45 miles that lay ahead of them.
